Safer Seasonal Strolling with Pets

Let’s face it – walking and running with our pets is just as good for us humans as it is for them.  Fresh air in our lungs, sunshine on our faces, and moving our two legs (or four) can help transform us into better, healthier selves.  However, as temperatures drop and ice and snow begin to appear on our favorite pathways and walk routes, we need to take special care and extra consideration for our pups.   This season, Pawfit has some tips to help keep you and your pet better prepared for walks and outdoor activities:

Choose a clear path

Whether you get snow or heavier rain in the winter months, always choose a safe place to walk your pup.  An icy or snowy path or a trail with rough, muddy terrain can cause slips and falls for pet walkers or make it more difficult for senior pets.  Clear areas around your home where your pup frequently goes outside so they can get around safely without worry of frosty paws!

Don’t forget to hydrate

Even in colder winter months, dehydration can still be a concern, so make sure your pups have plenty of water to drink, before, during, and after your walks. Bringing portable water bottles or bowls are great for your pup to hydrate on the go.  If your pet’s water bowl is outside or near a window, make sure it is clear of ice for full-on slurp engagement! Post-walk hot cocoa for humans is highly recommended too!

Keep your pets safe

As the snow banks get higher, so does the possibility of losing sight of your pup.  With less sunlight this time of year, consider a pet tracker like the Pawfit 3s to help keep any pet owner or lover free from worry with real-time GPS tracking, a FIND mode, customizable safe zones, light and sound alerts, and a unique Pawfit Voice recording feature.  Plus, the tracker is 100% waterproof and features extreme temperature alerts to warn you of temperatures that can be harmful to your pet to help prevent a frosty paws situation.

Dress for the weather

For everyone’s safety and comfort, pets and their owners should always dress for the weather they are walking in.  Depending on your dog’s breed, a sweater or coat, and in some cases walking booties can make all the difference.  Remember, while some pets thrive in the cold and snow, others do not like it and have more delicate paws.  Bundling up your pup will keep them warm AND stylin’!

Finding the balance between keeping fit and active but staying safe in different weather conditions is not im-pawsible if you plan accordingly.  With inclement weather, shorter and more frequent walks can be a great alternative to keep everyone healthy and happy.  After walking, dry your pup off and don’t forget to wipe their paws to clean off any salt, dirt or other harmful stuff that they may have picked up on your walk.  Above all, keeping track of your pet’s every move is always a smart choice no matter what the weather or season.
