After one of the longest winters in the books, spring is finally here! Yes, all those inches (or feet) of snow have finally melted, revealing your pet’s playground once again. As humans begin their spring cleaning and organizing rituals, let’s add another task to the list and get our pets ready for spring.
Some pets relished the cold, fluffy snow as they tunneled or made pup angels. But some pets find it a bit daunting or physically challenging to maneuver in. Even pet moms and dads were out and about less due to limited safe walking areas during winter. It’s time to prepare them for their newfound freedom, which we didn’t think would ever get here!
Spring home assessment
Check your yards for hazards and seasonal effects: Scan for flooding from the spring melting, foreign objects that may have blown in during a storm, or muddy areas you may not want your pet getting into, whether for cleanliness or safety reasons.

Use caution on walks
All the melted snow can reveal all kinds of treasures or trash that was buried over winter that is now exposed. Now that the sidewalks are visible again, the cracks and crevices are probably a bit deeper than they were last fall, so watch your step, whether you have two legs or four. As for smaller dogs and cats– that puddle may be deeper than they think!
Protect your pet
If you use a GPS pet tracker like Pawfit, take the time to set up your safety zones for places you frequent: the park, local gardens, or certain areas of your yard, until you can complete spring clean-up.
Lose the winter weight
Did they pack on a few extra pounds over the long winter? Now is the perfect time to check their weight, set some goals, and make a plan for better health. With the Pawfit app, you can set daily activity and exercise goals for your pet and stay motivated to get outdoors together.

As we all return outside again after our winter hibernation indoors, pets will love getting outside more frequently again without having to tunnel in the snow and other elements. Both pets and their parents will benefit from the much-needed exercise and fresh spring air.
