5 tips to improve your next training session with your dog

Did you know that January is train your dog month? It’s the perfect time to re-focus on your training goals, whether that’s training a new trick or re-enforcing an old one, and have some fun with it too!

To help make your next training session a breeze, we’re sharing our top 5 training tips.

Minimise distractions

Whenever you start training something new, do it in a quiet part of you home away from any distractions. This way, your dog can really focus on what you’re asking them to do with out something else stealing their focus. As they start to get the hang of it, you can gradually start increasing distractions.

Keep sessions short

To prevent your dog getting overwhelmed, keep your training sessions short, especially in the beginning. As soon as your dog starts getting bored or frustrated, end the session and try again later.

If you have a puppy, this might mean only training for a few minutes at a time but you can have multiple sessions spread throughout the day if they’re up for it.

Be patient

All dogs learn at their own pace so try not to get frustrated if your dog doesn’t seem to be learning things as quickly as other dogs. So long as you are consistent with your training, your dog will get there in their own time.

End on a positive note

At the end of a training session, end on a few reps of something your dog is really good at, whether that’s a really good sit or a classic paw shake. That way you can both leave the session feeling good about what you’ve done together.

Most importantly, have fun with it!

Training is a great way for you and your dog to bond, so try to keep it as fun as possible for the both of you. You’ll be more motivated to keep training and you might even find your dog progresses a lot more quickly. Win win!
