Old man Winter is certainly working overtime these days. Temperatures are dipping low across the country, and humans and their pups certainly feel it. However, despite this extreme weather, humans have to work, kids need to attend school, and a pup still has to play (or at least get the daily recommended exercise!). To keep your pup safe from the cold, consider their needs from toe to tail and how to protect them.
Wearables:
Pups can conveniently accessorize while protecting from cold at the same time. Now how cool is that (pun intended)? Sweaters and jackets can keep the wind off their backs and provide them with an extra layer of warmth. Booties can protect their paws from the bitter cold on long or short walks and also aid in keeping paws clean from winter slush.
Activity Adjustments:
There are lots of tweaks you can make to your pup’s day to keep the chill out of their bones. Take shorter walks, or try to walk when the sun is highest in the sky for maximum warmth. Getting creative and extending your indoor play sessions can also help keep pets happier if they are not getting outside as much as they would like.
Paw Patrol:
After being outside, always check your pet’s paws when they come indoors. Ice melt chemicals, salt, sharp chunks of ice, and other winter hazards can harm their paws and a quick wipe with reentry can help prevent any damage. Be sure to keep their paws clean and moisturized all winter for extra protection.
These are just a few tips on how to keep your pup safe from the cold. The Pawfit team is fairly certain we will join you back here in six months as we talk about doing the exact opposite in some cases (keeping cool in the summer heat, which is also a serious concern), but for now, the cold means business. Finally, make sure your pup is wearing their Pawfit tracker at all times- the extreme temperature alert feature will let you know when your pet is in danger so you can get them to a safer place.
