10 things the Pawfit community wish they’d known before getting their first puppy!

Everyone loves puppies. They’re cute little bundles of fur that bring so much joy into your life, but like every puppy pawrent will tell you, they can also be incredibly hard work.

If you’re about to become a first-time puppy pawrent, you might not be fully prepared for how much work goes into raising a happy puppy

So, we asked the Pawfit community to share a few things they wish they’d know before they’d got their first puppy…

Black and white border collie puppy

“Boy oh boy was Vinnie a terror! We majorly went wrong with the puppy socialisation. We over socialised and now other dogs are way more interesting to Vinnie than we are. We would 100% do things differently” – from Vinnie the Pooch’s Hooman

“You can’t leave them unsupervised, or they’ll cause havoc the second your back is turned!” – from Mark

“We didn’t realise how big an impact Lockdown would have on socialising Hugo” – from The House of Hugo’s Hooman

“How much training our pup would need. He’s fully trained now!” – from Benji the Orange Roan’s Hooman

“That they eventually stop being landsharks at around 9 months” – from Pawsomepups

“How much sleep you’ll lose in the first few weeks. I felt like a zombie getting up every few hours in the night, but it was all worth it in the end” – from Stacey

“The importance of diet, handling, and confidence training (travelling in cars, etc)” – from Little Cooper the Cocker’s Hooman

“That not every dog trains the same and don’t rely on the internet for help and that Border Collies can struggle with OCD so limit fetch to short sessions” – from Finley Collie’s Hooman

“How much it’ll cost. Food, treats, toys, crates, leads, harnesses and vet bills… it all adds up so quickly” – from James

Hettie’s Adventures – “To know recall is not always easy and can take a long time” – from Hettie’s Adventures’ Hooman
