Pets are an important part of our everyday lives. They can make us laugh (or cry), they can be our best friends, and they are part of our families. It’s no wonder that so many dogs, in particular, have been featured on the big screen and even on occasion in a starring role. However, while the humans in these movies are recognized each year for their various acting, technical work, and costume design, many times it is the dog that steals the show.
With the 95th Academy Awards coming up, we thought it would be fitting to highlight some key award categories that should be recognized for our furry friends. If you think your pup is a match for one of these categories, roll on over to Facebook or Instagram to share a photo of your pet and let us know the award that most suits their personality (bonus points if they are wearing a Pawfit tracker!):
Acting Awards: Best Drama King or Queen
Some pups have to let you know exactly how they are feeling in as dramatic a way as possible. You know the pose – flat on their back (or occasionally on the side if feeling lazy), paws and legs stretched out, and head tossed back in utter despair. Subtle nuances between each pose let you know “I’m bored”, “I’m exhausted” or “I need a new toy”. When these silent picture tactics don’t work, they move onto “talkies” by mastering the perfect pitch of whining to get what they want from belly rubs, a treat, or a game of fetch. Nothing these pups do is ever subtle!
Costume Design: Best Doggy Disguise
Clean dogs make an excellent canvas for mischief that can result in a whole new look for them. It could come in the form of mud, always available in a variety of tones and thicknesses, or it could be excessive grass stains that turn their fur into a unique shade of green. Sometimes a mess on your pup’s face creates a unique mask, while excessive naughtiness can result in a full body disguise where a clean dog is no longer recognizable. Whatever your pup gets into, we’re sure you have some award-winning memorable moments.
Supporting Actor/Actress: Best Destitute Dog Impression
Does your dog stare at you while you’re eating food? Do they hover around you in the kitchen watching the floor for the tiniest scrap to fall? Do they dive after a crumb like it is a piece of steak? Do they act like you never feed them when other guest humans are around to guilt you into giving them more food? While some breeds are more food motivated than others, many pups spend most of their day acting like they haven’t had a meal in days or trying to figure out where their next treat is coming from.
Overacting Award
This award can be given for a variety of scenarios. Upon the arrival of a houseguest, a package being dropped on the front steps or something as little as someone walking by your home, some pups, can whip themselves into a theatrical fury in an effort to warn their family. Pacing, drooling, running to all the windows with very serious “I’m the pup-of-the-house” barking to alert everyone in the home as well as most of the neighbors, your pup can create quite a scene letting you know someone is in fact – outside.
While countless other categories could be covered here, these are some of the common theatrics we see as pet owners. Pawfit would love to see your pup stealing the show in your home, so don’t forget to share a photo with us on Facebook or Instagram. In honor of the Oscars and all the dogs who never got to walk the red carpet, we say extra treats all around!
