A Pup Parents’ Guide to Giving Thanks

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, people everywhere are  taking time to reflect on what they’re thankful for.  As dog owners, we’re grateful every day for our pups, but this season is a good time to think of what we are grateful for year-round with our pups.

Sure, they can be messy, needy, drooly, clingy, zoomy, crazy, and so much more, but we love them all the same.  Their antics make us laugh, their neediness makes us feel loved, and they give us more every day than we could even think to ask for.

It’s also a time to be thankful for all the amazing caregivers in our pets’ lives  – the vets, the dog walkers, a neighbor’s watchful eye, and more.

We’re thankful for all of them, so why not show them now?

The best way to say thanks to your pup is to show them you care, like fitting in some extra playtime even when you are tired.  Just a few minutes of effort to have fun with your pup can end up in a rewarding cuddle for both of you!

Have you ever had a bad day only to come home and instantly be lifted up by your dog? The wagging tail, the excited eyes, or the extra licks they greet you with can turn any day around in a single moment.  Only pets have the power to do that for humans so quickly and without a thought.   So, next time your pet looks bored or in need of some exercise or attention, be sure to indulge them with full force and enthusiasm.

Always look after your pet in the neighborhood. After all, not all people are pet owners or lovers, so be sure to pick up your pet’s waste, keep them out of neighbor’s yards, and be aware of excessive vocal conditioning.  Every dog needs to stretch their lungs with a good bark, but be mindful of the time of day.  Being respectful is a good way to say thank you to all the pet owners and non-owners who live nearby.

Next time you take your pet to the vet, take a moment to say a big thank you to the everyone who’s looked after your pet each visit.  The doctor, technicians, and check-in team all play a vital role in providing your pet with the best possible care.  A few extra words can go a long way to those that help keep your pet healthy and making sure they feel appreciated.

Knowing your pet is taken care of in your absence can give you peace of mind. There is nothing like dropping your pup off at daycare or wondering what your dog walker will do with your pup while you’re at work or away on vacation.  The best caregivers can help you feel more comfortable leaving your pet in their care.  So, when your pup is well-exercised, loved, and cared for in your absence, it is truly something to be grateful for.  Take the time this week to thank your pet caretakers for the best of care.

Show your pup you love them by saving some of that pumpkin from the Thanksgiving feast.  Instead of feeding your pup people food, a special treat for Thanksgiving may go a long way.  Make a batch of pumpkin treats for your pup.  Pumpkin is a healthy ingredient to use when making dog treats and pups love the taste!  Here are a few of our favorite recipes.

There are countless other ways to show your pet and those who care for your pet how important they are.  While we are thankful every day, this time of year, show them you appreciate them with a gesture that works for you.
