A Thanksgiving Day Designed for Pups

Each November, we gather around the dining table with our family and friends and give our thanks. We are blessed with an amazing feast of turkey, gravy, vegetables, all the other fixings, pies, and many other goodies. Nearby -and likely drooling- are our beloved pups that we are thankful for too!  While they may not have a “seat at the table”, there is no reason why they cannot enjoy a little Thanksgiving of their own. According to the American Kennel Club, there are many foods we eat on Thanksgiving that your pup can share in too!

Many of these foods are already present in some of the dog foods and treats we feed our pup every day, but be sure to keep it plain and simple!  As you are preparing your meal, remember to build a plate for your pup as you go and before you add in additional ingredients (such as butter, sugar, cream, onions, etc.).  You can even make a few of the Thanksgiving recipes from the tips list below to show them how special they are:

Additional Tips and Recipes for a pup-tastic Thanksgiving:

  • Lick mats are great for keeping pups busy while the humans enjoy their meal without the “begging eyes” at the table.  Just smear some plain sweet potato or squash onto the mat and let them busy themselves while you dine.
  • Take the opportunity to choose Thanksgiving Special treats and nourish your pooch with nutrients their particular weight or breed will benefit from.
  • The holidays can be a busy time with many more guests in your home than usual, and you want to make sure you don’t drop your guard in protecting your pup.  Be sure to keep harmful foods out of reach of pups and warn your guests of the house rules such as not allowing pups to eat table foods. You don’t want them to overeat or eat something that isn’t on their “menu!”
  • Give them something to feast their eyes (and paws!) on this Thanksgiving.  Try a few recipes out such as Turkey and Cranberry Bones  or learn how to Make a Barkuterie Board for your pets

Finally, after the big meal, we’ll all need a nice big walk to work off all the extra treats.  So, strap your Pawfit tracker onto your pup and get started working off that dinner.  More holiday celebrations are on their way in December, so get ready for round two of feasting!
