If you’ve ever experienced your cat going missing, you’ve probably considered getting a tracker to attach to their collar so you can always see where they are. But with some many different types of trackers around, it’s not easy knowing which is the right option for you. Is a Bluetooth tracker like an AirTag or a GPS tracker better for tracking your cat?

How far do cats roam?
Cats have their own territories that they explore and on average can roam between 40m to 200m a day. Some cats have been known to wander multiple miles a day.
Can cats find their way home?
Whilst most cats can find their own way home, 55% of cat owners have said that their cat has gone missing at some point and only half of those reported lost found their way back home again.
It’s no surprise then that more and more cat owners are getting a tracker to keep their beloved pets safe. But the question is, is a GPS tracker or Bluetooth tracker best for tracking your cat?
What’s a Bluetooth tracker?
There are a variety of Bluetooth trackers on the market nowadays, with the most popular being the Apple AirTag and the Tile, and they generally all work the same way. You attach the device to whatever you want to track, and via the app on your phone you can see it’s location.
Bluetooth trackers are small, lightweight, have a long battery life and no subscription costs – sound perfect as a cat tracker right? Unfortunately, there’s a few drawbacks. Bluetooth trackers only have a range of no more than 40m meaning if your cat is outside that range, you won’t be able to locate them. Not ideal when your cat is missing and you need to find them fast. In fact, Apple has even said their AirTag is not designed to track animals due to the limitations in Bluetooth technology.
Their small size also means there’s a potential for them to be eaten and the batteries could be lethal if ingested, or at the very least result in a very expensive vet bill.

What’s a GPS tracker?
GPS trackers, like Pawfit, use to the mobile network to communicate with satellites to send location updates to an app on your phone. This means that unlike Bluetooth trackers, they have an unlimited tracking range. No matter how far away you are from your cat, so long as the tracker has signal, you’ll receive a location update.
What is the best GPS tracker for cats?
There’s a wide variety of cat GPS trackers and not all are created equal so it’s important to get one that’s right for you. Things to think about include the size and weight of the tracker, what additional features it has and how much the ongoing subscription costs.
